Golden, Colo., June 28, 2016 - Golden Software, LLC, the leading developer of affordable scientific graphics software, announces the release of Strater 5, an intuitive subsurface visualization program designed to display a wide variety of well log, borehole, and cross section data.

Strater is a powerful and innovative well log, borehole and cross section plotting software package for geoscientists. With its modern and easy-to-use user interface, Strater is so straightforward even a beginner can create high-quality professional representations of subsurface data in no time.

This is a list of free and open-source software for geological data handling and interpretation. The list is split into broad categories, depending on the intended use of the software and its scope of functionality.

Excellent facilities for graduate research in petroleum and geosystems engineering are available in the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Building. In addition to departmental offices and classrooms, the building houses over 40,000 square feet of laboratory space, providing unique capabilities for studies in production logging, vertical and inclined flow in wells, artificial lift, core flooding for enhanced oil recovery, subsurface environmental remediation, drilling, stimulation, rock mechanics, well log digitizing and interpretation, PVT analysis, reservoir simulation development and application, and unconventional resources. Additional laboratory space at the J. J. Pickle Research Campus is used for research. A machine shop is maintained to fabricate and support research equipment.

We extracted the zipped download and installed Digitize It, which opened with an interface that is similar in style to graphics editors but notable for floating options and tool tips boxes within the main window. The toolbar icons are mostly familiar with the addition of tools to sort plots by XY or YX values, AutoRead points, and other controls unique to the Digitize It's function. The program can acquire images from scanners, capture screen images, and paste clipboard data as well as import data or load locally stored image data in BMP, ICO, WMF, JPG, and GIF formats. We clicked Picture and selected Import, and then browsed to a digital snapshot. We could zoom and rotate the image as well as set the scale by clicking opposite corners to provide precise scaling data. To plot image data, we simply clicked at any point in the image, and the point appeared in the Data Points table, numbered sequentially and listing the X- and Y-axis to several decimal points. We could easily re-sort the Data Points list, edit it, and save it for a variety of uses, including replotting by other programs. The tabbed Options dialog let us set Axis Scale, the color coding for the AutoRead tool, Interpolation settings, and Pointer options. The tool tips box offered Recommended Procedures in a brief, step-by-step form, and there's a good Help file, though some Vista and Windows 7 users may need to open the Help file from the program folder because of a known issue with later editions of Windows. Digitize It actually bothers to explain it clearly, a welcome surprise.

In addition to reports, surveys, databases, maps, software, there are also filings and legal reports which can help in decision-making. The fact that the information is readily available via the internet, and that there are many free cloud-based collaborative tools, makes it more viable than ever to work in teams to quickly put together ideas, evaluate ideas, and make recommendations.

There are low cost, or even free software packages for your use depending on what you are trying to accomplish. OpendTect ( ) has an open source, free to use, interpretation platform that is fairly user friendly. It was the tools for most prospecting applications, as well as modules for expandable capabilities. They also have a public domain data sets for you to practice with, or use as examples to show your skills.

KC Petrophysics ( ) has a free LAS application which is great for reading vintage LAS files and converting them to be used in modern packages. Their Pro software is only $200 and very capable of most petrophysical work.

Be creative with your software vendors. Nearly every vendor has a free license period. It may or may not be allowed to be used commercially during that time but obtaining a trial license may keep you current, or allow you to learn a new software package. When you have a contract in, you may be able to negotiate a short term license arrangement. There are also some vendors who will generously train you on their software while you are finding your next opportunity.

These are very valuable resources. That said, it is important not to over-emphasize the free resources. Although extremely useful to people with limited capital, free software has its drawbacks, and they do not have the user-friendly convenience, power, and robustness of SAS, IHS, DrillingInfo, Petra, Petrel, and other popular packages. This is also true of data sets.
